Electronic Press Kit
Donkey Island Penitentiary is fresh off completing our second EP, and you can listen to Escape From... and our first EP Exile on 4th Street below.
Big Dave, Alejandro, Vincent and Miguel are a fearsome foursome of harmonica, guitars, drums and bass. Donkey Island Penitentiary is the sound of garage, punk and science fiction, filtered through the blues, while Big Dave growls dreamy lyrics about his nightmares. In 2014, Big Dave spent a month in a coma, and as he lay dying his mind became unstuck in time. Upon waking, he told Alejandro and Vincent of his strangely vivid dreams: time travel, deals with devils, vigilante justice, and regret across different planes of consciousness. Once he relearned to walk, the Donkeys got to work.
We've played across Southern California, with a successful months long residency at Old Town Pub in Pasadena, trips to Joshua Tree on stages big and small, and appearances at notable Los Angeles clubs Silverlake Lounge, Molly Malones, and the infamous Viper Room, among others. We were semi-finalists in the Battle for the Vans Warped Tour and headlined the international YouBloom Music Summit and Festival. We've also been on Southern California College Radio, and even made the Locals Only Show on KLOS, 95.5fm.
Donkey Island Penitentiary is available for festivals, opening slots and headlining gigs in 2018. We've been crafting our stories in secret. Now is the time for our escape.
Catch us if you can!
Escape from... (ep)
"I cannot forget "Escape from D.I.P." which makes me picture a prison break, literally--or maybe I'm on my horse trying to cross the desert--you got to listen for yourself."
-Marvin Vasquez - Threat of Joy
Some music is made for dancing in wild abandon and 'Shoot You Down' you down is a case in point."
-Tim Whale, Emerging Indie Bands
"It’s old school and dramatic, the classic spaghetti-western soundtrack as always, perfectly produced and perfectly delivered. "
-Bethany Jinks, Musically Fresh
Exile on 4th Street (EP)
"The music as a whole is unique... The songs become hypnotic, sci-fi and weird, but then the melodies and subtleties bring it all back to very cool"
- Pierce Brochetti, Music Connection Magazine
"Their Punk and Blues cross-over with it’s Latin roots, tells tales of vigilante justice, deals with the devil and time travel and is nothing short of fantastic and If I’m honest, I’m a little bit in love with it."
- Bethany Jinks, Musically Fresh
"Our personal favorite is "Going Down" on Track 5, a slower moving song that will yank at your heart while you are tapping your toes and rolling to its classical blues rock beat."
